MUMBAI: Gujarat Titans mentor Gary Kirsten praised Wriddhiman Saha on Sunday, saying the wicket-keeper hitter understands his game very well and is “brilliant” against the short ball.
Gujarat Titans rode Saha’s solid 67 to tame Chennai Super Kings by seven wickets and book their place in Qualifier 1. Saha scored an unbeaten 67.
“We were obviously very impressed (by Saha). It’s great to have him (Saha) in the team. He’s a real professional. And he has good experience in the IPL and all (forms) of cricket,” Kirsten said during the post-match virtual press conference.
Also on Sunday, Saha once again played hammer and pliers on the power play, scoring seven boundaries and a six.
“He (Saha) understands his game and plays very well on the power play. For us he was always an important asset to have when we needed him and he came and did very well,” said the South African, who has also coached India in the past.
“….I don’t think there’s anything specific we need to say to him (Saha) because he knows how to play on the power play very well. The most important thing is that the guys (players) play according to their strengths and abilities. He’s a great short-pitch player.”
South Africa believe head coach Ashish Nehra has done an excellent job of setting up a very strong bowling attack.
Kirsten also said pacemaker Yash Dayal must have gained confidence by conceding just eight runs in the penultimate set.
“Yash Dayal is an incredibly talented young player, having a left arm in your bowl (that) can play all 20 overs is important. So it’s a great opportunity for us to use him in the 19th and he did a great throw, made eight points and it’s a real confidence for him, ”he signed.
