It’s a year later than expected, but the 2020 Summer Olympics are finally here.
The competition is underway in Tokyo, and the first medals were presented on Saturday.
The opening ceremony took place on Friday and thousands of athletes from over 200 countries were in attendance. But the stadium seats were mostly empty. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, only a small number of officials and dignitaries were able to attend.
Tokyo is still in a state of emergency due to the Covid-19 pandemic which delayed the Games by a year, and no spectators are allowed at any of the city’s Olympic venues. Only five of Japan’s 42 Olympic venues will be open to fans. Some athletes have already had to withdraw from the Games due to positive Covid-19 tests.
Here are the most compelling photos we’ve seen from these Olympics so far.
