Texas Governor Abbott cancels in-person appearance at NRA convention and will travel to Uvalde instead

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has canceled plans to attend the National Rifle Association annual meeting this weekend and will instead appear via video and hang out in Uvalde, Texas following a shooting in a school that left 21 people dead.

“Governor Abbott will make remarks via pre-recorded video at the NRA conference,” Abbott’s campaign spokesman Mark Miner said in a statement Friday. “He will go to Uvalde today.”

Abbott was scheduled to attend the convention in Houston where several prominent Republicans, including Senator Ted Cruz and former President Donald Trump, were scheduled to speak.

Several prominent personalities, including singers Larry Gatlin and Don McLean, have canceled their NRA conference appearances after Salvador Ramos, 18, walked into Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday and shot dead 19 children and two faculty members.

Trump said Wednesday he intended to keep his commitment to attend the event.

“America needs real solutions and real leadership right now, not politicians and partisanship,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Wednesday. “That’s why I will keep my long-standing commitment to speak in Texas at the NRA convention and deliver an important speech in America. In the meantime, we all continue to pray for the victims, their families, and four of our entire nation – we’re all in this together.”

Weapons maker Daniel Defence, which made the rifle used by Ramos to carry out the attack, announced on Thursday that it had canceled plans to promote products at the event.

“Daniel Defense is not attending the National Rifle Association (“NRA”) meeting due to the horrific tragedy in Uvalde, Texas where one of our products was used for criminal purposes,” Daniel Defense vice president of marketing Steve Reed told Fox News Digital. in a statement Thursday. “We believe this week is not the appropriate time to promote our products in Texas at the NRA meeting.”

The NRA expects tens of thousands of people to attend the annual meeting. This is the first mass rally of NRA members in three years following a break during the pandemicand follows decades of holding the annual event.

“The NRA is very pleased to welcome this lineup of nationally recognized pro-freedom political leaders to Houston, Texas – and just one year after Texas passed historic constitutional law. It will be a celebration of freedom. and the Second Amendment in a state that truly respects our constitutional rights,” Jason Ouimet, executive director of the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action, told Fox News Digital in early May.
