Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, was confronted by an activist on Friday who first demanded a photo with the Republican lawmaker, before arguing with him over the deadly shooting in Uvalde and his support for the rights of the second amendment.
Cruz was at a restaurant after speaking at the 2022 National Rifle Association (NRA) annual convention in Houston, Texas, and posed for a photo with activist Benjamin Hernandez — at that time, Hernandez l confronted over his stance on gun rights following the school shooting in Uvalde in which a gunman killed 19 children and two adults.

In the clip, posted by Indivisible Houston, Hernandez then asks Cruz about gun control measures — including asking why Cruz doesn’t support more background checks.
“The background check wouldn’t have stopped the shooter,” Cruz replies. “You know what would have been? The bill I introduced…”
Hernandez then interrupts Cruz, more and more agitated.
“We can make it harder for people to get guns in this country, sir,” he says. “You know that, but you stand here, you stand at the NRA convention, it’s harder when there are more guns to stop gun violence.”
Cruz accused the man of combining “ignorance and hatred”.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” he says in the clip.

Hernandez, who describes himself as a “formerly undocumented” immigrant and once ran for Congress, continues to argue with Cruz as security gets involved and tells him to “back off”.
“Why does this keep happening,” cries Hernandez, before accusing Cruz of coming to the convention to “take the blood money.”
As he becomes increasingly agitated, security begins to drag him out of the restaurant, at which point he yells at Cruz, “Why when 19 kids are dead, it’s in your hands…Ted Cruz it’s in your hands.”
Hernandez later defended his actions on Twitter.
“I wasn’t going to let that f—er walk into the restaurant where I was having dinner without him hearing me,” he said. said. “They can do something, but they just don’t want to. So let them.”

This is the latest example of left-wing activists confronting or haranguing lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who disagree with them.
Several Trump administration officials have been confronted at restaurants during the Trump administration. More recently, Portland Democratic Mayor Ted Wheeler was beaten by activists at a restaurant last year. In October, moderate Democratic Senator Kyrsten Sinema was chased into a bathroom by illegal immigrant activists for her lack of support for amnesty.
Melissa Byrne, a former Bernie Sanders campaign staffer, was one of those who supported Hernandez’s actions.
“People. Birddog ’em almost everywhere,” she tweeted.

Earlier at the NRA convention, Cruz called for dramatically increased school security, including single entrances, armed guards, and more, as he railed against the Democrats to push gun control. There, he also mentioned his legislation that would create a federal task force to prosecute people who buy firearms illegally, and that would ensure that all federal crime databases are up to date.
Cruz also denounced changes in American culture, including violent media and isolation in “virtual life in the absence of community, faith and love” as fundamental issues that cause shootings like the one in ‘Uvalde.
