Shortage of infant formula not a problem in Mexico, parents say

Infant formula can be easily found in the southern United States despite the shortage, parents in a Mexican border town told Fox News.

“Well, in that moment when I got formula, I saw two, three people get formula on the other side,” said Jorge, from Tijuana. “They have it everywhere in pharmacies, in any store.”

As the United States faces an infant formula shortage due to a recall and pandemic-related supply chain issues, some Americans have told Fox News that they are buying infant formula from Mexico. The shortage prompted President Biden to invoke the Defense Production Act to ensure manufacturers have the supplies needed to produce infant formula.

“The very first Costco I bought [to]the formula is here,” said Francisco, who was looking to purchase a formula on behalf of his adult son in the United States. “He can’t just get it in the United States. »

“He knows that here in Tijuana it seems like there are a lot of them,” Francisco continued.

Carla, the mother of a 2-year-old, told Fox News, “I don’t know anyone who has trouble finding” formula.

Another mum from Tijuana, Melanie, said: “I haven’t had a problem, but I know a lot of mums from a Facebook group who live in the United States, and they’re like crazy trying to get some milk.”

“A lot of them come to Tijuana to buy,” Melanie added.

One of the causes of the infant formula shortage in the United States was an infant formula recall by producer Abbot Nutrition. Abbott and the federal government have taken steps to mitigate the problem, but it could take up to two months before shelves are back in stock, FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said Thursday.

Brenda, a U.S. native shopping formula in Tijuana, told Fox News, “A friend of mine, she lives in [Los Angeles]so she’s in trouble…because they’re out of formula.”

“If they have trouble finding their formula in the United States, they can just cross the border and buy it here at pharmacies or any store where you can find it,” Brenda continued.

Francisco echoed his comments.

“It won’t be difficult for anyone in the United States to come and try to get something,” he said.

Melanie told Fox News, “I buy formula at the drugstore, so I don’t have a problem. But I know there is a problem.”
