NEW DELHI: Many seniors, including captain Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, are all set to rest for the next five-game T20 series against South Africa, with an eye on the marquee tour to England in July.
Additionally, the National Selection Committee is also set to excuse Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant from the Proteas fights.
It is understood that veteran fly-half Shikhar Dhawan and all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who impressed everyone with his captaincy for Gujarat Titans in IPL 15, count for the lead role for both South Africa Sud and the short two-game T20I series. against Ireland.

The T20 rubber against the Proteas will kick off in the nation’s capital on June 9 with the remaining matches taking place in Cuttack, Visakhapatnam, Rajkot and Bengaluru respectively.
The SA Series team is set to be selected on May 22 – the final day of the Championship Stage of this edition of the IPL – in Mumbai.
The PTI have already reported that an out-of-form Virat Kohli will also enjoy a well-deserved break, but it is understood that for the selectors as well as the BCCI, the England tour starting in early July is paramount.
“All senior Indian players will be given at least three and a half weeks of full rest. Rohit, Virat, KL, Rishabh and Jasprit will all go straight to England for the ‘fifth test’ after the series of white balls. We need all our key players need to stay fresh for the English series,” a senior BCCI source familiar with the development told PTI on condition of anonymity.
As part of workload management, not all senior players in all formats will be part of the next seven T20 Internationals.
Asked about the captaincy, the source said: “The selectors have several choices. Shikhar Dhawan, as he has already captained India in the absence of Virat, Rohit and Rahul in the Sri Lanka Series of the Year But Hardik Pandya’s impressive captaincy for the Gujarat Titans didn’t go unnoticed. So it will be a close call,” he added.

Mohsin Khan could beat Umran Malik in SA squad
While Umran Malik has generated considerable excitement with his 150+mph pace, there is a feeling he is too raw and time with the India A team could help him develop better.
While he remains in the mix with death specialist Arshdeep Singh, the man who emerges as a ‘Dark Horse’ is Lucknow Super Giants left hander Mohsin Khan.
“Our pace bowling department is set and the selectors might not experiment too much,” he said.
“But yeah, Mohsin has impressed almost everyone with his pace, bounce and swing in this edition. He has a chance. That said, not ruling out Umran or Arshdeep either, but Mohsin might just be slightly ahead,” he added.
It is understood that most players who recently played in the T20 series against Sri Lanka and West Indies should be kept regardless of their current IPL form.
Obviously, injury to Suryakumar Yadav or Ravindra Jadeja has to be considered and Deepak Chahar won’t be available either.
The likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Hooda as well as Dhawan and Hardik are expected to form the core of the batting unit. Sanju Samson could also be retained and there could be at most one left field selection on the team.
In the rhythm bowling unit, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Prasidh Krishna, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan are all certainties, along with the stellar IPL spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal. Kuldeep Yadav is also expected to make the cut.
