“Unfortunately, they told me that in the medium to long term, to feel better, I would need surgery, so I decided to do it. I will be on crutches for several weeks, then also out of the game for several months. “
“I want to be healthy. I also want to run later, again, and I also want to give myself a silver lining to come back to the tour in some form or another,” he added.
“I’m a realist, don’t get me wrong. I know how difficult it is at this age right now to do another surgery and try it.”
Federer missed more than a year of action after undergoing two knee operations after the Australian Open in 2020.
He returned for the 2021 French Open but withdrew after his third round victory to protect his knee. Federer then lost in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in June.
After his loss at Wimbledon, he withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics after announcing a knee injury.
This year’s US Open is scheduled to start on August 30 and end on September 12 in New York City.
