‘Tree Full of Parrots’ is a Malayalam film directed by Jayaraj. It tells the story of an eight-year-old boy, Poonjan, who is no ordinary boy. He earns his living by doing odd jobs like fishing in the calm waters and takes care of his family consisting of a father, a grandfather and a drunken great-grandfather. His mother ran away with another person years ago. One day while fishing, Poonjan saw a blind man sitting alone in the shipyard who seemed to have lost his way home. He is crazy and only remembers a certain tree full of parrots in front of his house. An attempt to report this man to the police station was unsuccessful. On the way through the banks of the river, he inquired, but no one could guide them. Disheartened by the outcome of their journey, Poonjan was about to give up the quest. It was then that he heard the sound of a parrot which led him to “the tree full of parrots”!
Finally Poonjan decided to find his way back to the blind man’s house by trying to spot the tree full of parrots. Although the blind man’s son and daughter-in-law gave a warm welcome, something seemed fishy. Poonjan’s suspicions were confirmed when he overheard their conversation. While selling their current home and moving into a new one, they hoped to get rid of the blind man. During the conversation, it became clear that they consider the blind as a burden, which must be rid of.
As they left, Poonjan said goodbye to the blind man and got on the boat. However, knowing what he knows of the blind man’s fate, Poonjan’s conscience refused to leave him alone. Unbeknownst to anyone, he decides to invite the blind man on the return trip. Poonjan, accompanied by the blind man, rows the boat to the horizon.
