rajya sabha: SP appoints RLD leader Jayant Chaudhary to Rajya Sabha | India News

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – The Samajwadi party led by Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday nominated Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader Jayant Chaudhary for the Rajya Sabha seat of Uttar Pradesh, knocking out the SP leader’s wife, Dimple Yadav.

Chaudhary was seen as an obvious choice among the SP’s three-seat quota after the young Jat leader rejected all attempts by the BJP to woo him in the Assembly elections.
Political observers had said that if Dimple had been chosen, he would have given the ruling BJP ammunition to take on the main opposition party on the issue of ‘pariwarvaad’ (dynasty politics).
Kapil Sibal and Javed Ali
For its other two seats, the PS nominated its top leader Javed Ali Khan and decided to support the candidacy of former Congress leader Kapil Sibal, who filed his papers as an independent candidate.
Reports say Kapil Sibal and Javed Ali made the cut as the SP leader wanted to keep party veteran Azam Khan in good spirits. Azam had been in prison since February 2020 and the PS leadership had used its “friendship” with Sibal to convince him to take Azam’s case to the Supreme Court.
Sibal pursued Azam’s case and he was released on bail last week.
Javed Ali’s candidacy would be in line with the party’s internal request to send a Muslim to Rajya Sabha only to reassure the community that the party is sticking to it.
