NEW DELHI: The Electoral Commission will not shy away from tough decisions while fulfilling its constitutional responsibility and will pursue electoral reforms following the tried and tested democratic methods of consultation and consensus, Chief Electoral Commissioner says Rajiv Kumar after taking the reins of the electoral body on Sunday.
Kumar, who succeeds Sushil Chandra as CEC, has served as Election Commissioner since September 1, 2020. He will serve a 2-year, 9-month term at the helm, during which he will preside over the 2024 Lok Sabha general election.
After taking office, Kumar said he was honored to be entrusted with the responsibility of leading “one of the finest institutions offered by the Indian Constitution – the institution that strengthens our democracy”.
He said a lot has been done by ECI over the past 70 years to
give citizens free and fair elections, to ensure the purity of voter lists, prevent abuse and improve the quality of elections.
“The Commission will follow tried and tested democratic methods of consultation and consensus-building to carry out any major reform in dynamically changing contexts. And in matters for which it is responsible under the Constitution, the ECI will not hesitate to make difficult decisions,” he said.
Kumar also said that technology will further become the primary instrument for streamlining processes and practices to ensure transparency and ease of voter services for better election management and operations.
