A Texas Democrat who was among more than 50 state lawmakers to travel from Austin to Washington, DC earlier this week to block a GOP voting bill by denying a quorum has been called out by critics on social media Thursday night for an article about her hand washing clothes.

Critics suggested the post was another selfish attempt by a Democrat to describe his absence from Texas – after taking a charter flight to the nation’s capital – as a personal sacrifice instead of a political strategy move.

“You bet we recognize and honor the heritage of our country,” said State Representative Donna Howard. “Like most Texans, tho [sp], this is what we do tonight: use everything that is accessible, wash [sic] our clothes in the sink. “

Howard’s Twitter post included a photo of his wet clothes draped over a shower curtain in what looked like a modest hotel room.

Some Democrat supporters see them as defending democracy itself, while critics see their Washington getaway as an exclusive summer sightseeing tour of Washington, during which they ate salads and drank Miller Lites – for the penny from someone else.

TEXAS SPEAKER CALLS ON STATE DEMOCRATS WHO FURGED IN WASHINGTON TO LOSE WAGES

The Texas State Legislature is a part-time body whose members receive an annual salary of $ 7,200. Thus, the vast majority of delegates have other primary jobs in Texas. But state officials receive a per diem allowance of $ 221 for days the legislature is in session.

A spokesperson for Gov. Greg Abbott’s office told Fox News on Wednesday that Democrats who visited Washington still received this daily allowance.

Some critics have questioned why Howard’s clothes weren’t just washed.

Matt Whitlock, a Republican commentator, called the lawmaker’s tweet “super strange.”

“But as you know, you wouldn’t have to do this if you were at home in Texas doing your job,” he tweeted. “Instead of being here to do tourist things and to enlighten election bills that accomplish nothing.”

Howard’s office did not immediately respond to an after-hours email from Fox News seeking comment.

Texas House Democrats left the state on Monday in an attempt to break the quorum and stop votes on two election bills introduced by Republicans in the state. Lawmakers took a private flight to Washington, where they planned to lobby for the protection of federal voters.

The situation unfolding in Texas has little gray area. Republicans – like Gov. Greg Abbott – see the bill as a common sense approach to voting. Abbott appeared on Fox News earlier this week and criticized President Biden and the Democrats for spreading “misinformation” about the Election Redesign Bill.

He insisted that the Texas bill “makes voting EASIER and harder to cheat.”

Abbott accused lawmakers of “dragging a taxpayer-paid trip” and said they would be arrested when they returned.

The delegation had maintained that the entire trip was funded by donations from the state’s Democratic caucus, not taxpayers. They are also in the midst of a public debate over whether to turn down their $ 221 a day.

“Our mission here in Washington is to use this period of this legislative session by August 7 to tell the United States Senate that we need to pass federal voting rights legislation. And we need it now,” said Rep. Chris Turner. or Arlington, the leader of the Texas House Democrats. “And we’re going to have big problems, as best we can, while we do it.”

The Texas Republican Speaker has announced plans to charter a plane that will be “on hold” in Washington while he waits to bring home the Democratic lawmakers who fled the state.

“I demand that all of our colleagues in Washington immediately contact my staff to reserve their seats on the plane and return to Austin to conduct state business,” said President Dade Phelan. said in a press release. “The State of Texas is waiting.”
