SRINAGAR: Four terrorists, including two from Pakistan, were killed in two ongoing J&K encounters on Sunday. As two terrorists from Pakistan’s Lashkar-e-Taiba were shot dead in North Kashmir Kupwara district, two local terrorists were killed in Kulgam district, south Kashmir, police said.
Based on information from an arrested terrorist, Showkat Ahmed Sheikha joint team of Army together with the Kupwara police, they launched a cordon and search operation in the forests of Chandigam Lolab. While searching a suspected hideout, the entrenched terrorists opened fire on security forces, who returned fire. In the ensuing shootout, two terrorists from Pakistan were killed while the arrested terrorist, Showkat, was also trapped, IGP (Kashmir Range) Vijay Kumar said, adding that a fierce firefight was still ongoing in the area. .
Meanwhile, at around 3:30 p.m., a joint army and Kulgam police team launched a cordon and search operation in Kulgam DH. Pore area based on information about the presence of terrorists in that area. A fierce exchange of fire ensued after the holed up terrorists were cornered with the CRPF who then joined the operation, the IGP said. Two local terrorists – identified as Haris Sharief from Srinagar and Zakir Padder from Kulgam – were killed in the shooting, which continued up to press time.
Police said Haris belonged to LeT while Zakir was affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammad. Both were Category C terrorists involved in several terrorist crimes, including attacks on security establishments as well as civilian atrocities. Haris had been missing since May 26. He was previously arrested by Awantipora Police in 2020 for providing shelter and logistical support to LeT and assisting active LeT terrorists in Pampore, Khrew and Kakapora areas of Pulwama district.
In another development on Sunday, three surface workers associated with the outlawed Al-Badr outfit were arrested with weapons and ammunition in the Handwara area of ​​Kupwara by a joint army, CRPF and police team. police manning a checkpoint at Wangam Crossing. A pistol, magazines, eight cartridges and two hand grenades were seized from the trio, police said, adding that a case under UAPA has been registered at Kralgund PS in this regard.
“By targeting innocent civilians, including women and children, unarmed police and poor migrant workers, terrorists cannot deter our efforts to bring peace to the valley. Our counter-terrorism operations will continue simultaneously in the three regions of the Kashmir Valley, especially against foreign terrorists,” IGP Kumar said.
