NEW DELHI: Indian boxers Nitu (48kg) and Manisha (57kg) have advanced to the quarter-finals of the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul after recording contrasting victories on Saturday.
Nitu, who was competing in the event for the first time, prevailed 5-0 over Spain’s Marta Lopez Del Arbol in the lowest weight class to advance to the round of 16.
Manisha, meanwhile, picked up a 4-1 victory over Svetlana Staneva of Bulgaria to advance to the featherweight quarter-finals.
Former two-time world youth champion Nitu showed off her technical prowess while keeping the upper hand throughout the fight.
The 21-year-old from Haryana used her long reach to good effect as she landed powerful punches.
The defending national champion will face Kazakhstan’s Alua Balkibekova in the quarterfinals on Monday.
Manisha, the 2019 Asian Championships bronze medalist, was engaged in a grueling and messy fight that had its fair share of clinch, holdup and even falls in the ring.
The 24-year-old will then face the tough challenge of world youth bronze medalist Namuun Monkhor of Mongolia in the quarter-finals on Monday.
Double Asian champion Pooja Rani (81 kg) entered the quarterfinals on Friday.
Sunday, six Indian boxers of which will be in action in the fights of the round of 16.
