Neighbors – the latest episode: Ramsay Street residents past and present say goodbye with emotion | Ents & Arts News

Everyone needs good neighbors – but alas, it’s finally time to say goodbye once and for all to the people of Ramsay Street.

After 37 years and 8,903 episodes, Neighbors is no more – the last emotional episodes having aired in Australia before airing in the UK.

Since he was announced that the soap was being phased outno doubt those of us of a certain age, fans who were glued to his heyday, desperately puffed up the last, ooh, 20 or so years to make sure we’re up to speed.

Alright, maybe it’s just me. But while growing up and moving on with adulthood meant we ditched our daily 5.35pm habit a while ago, it still provided comfortable TV on days when we were home and free to spend. As the faces changed, like any good friend you haven’t seen in a while, it was never too hard to pick up where we left off.

In the 80s and 90s, Neighbors was an event television. Scott and Charlene’s wedding, Bouncer’s dream, of course, but also so many other relationships, love triangles and dramas. Brad and Beth! Phoebe and Todd! Libby and Drew! And I’m sure I’m not the only one convinced that Jim Robinson (Alan Dale, now of The OC and Lost Fame) sang the theme song. Right?

So it really is the end of an era. And how do you end a show that has been an integral part of our culture for so long?

Well, if you’re neighbors, you have a Toadie wedding. You create a storybook scenario for people to share their memories, giving viewers a walk down Ramsay Street memory lane. And you invite the heavy hitters.

It’s no spoiler to say that Scott and Charlene are back, driving down Ramsay Street blasting a song that will no doubt fill Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan the fans with joy. But Hollywood star Guy Pearce and Annie Jones are also there, as Mike Young and “Plain” Jane Harris, and there are cameos from Delta Goodrum, Holly Valance, Natalie Imbruglia and Margot Robbie.

There’s something truly lovely about seeing so many past and present stars appear on screen to be part of this final farewell. I mean, Robbie would be the highest paid actress in Hollywood – it’s Barbie! – Pearce didn’t do too badly either, and Kylie Minogue is Kylie Minogue.

In an industry where big stars can sometimes want to distance themselves from their less serious roots, it’s a testament to the love for Neighbors and how these famous faces credit the show with being on the list a.

A voiceover by Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis) sets the stage for what, for many, will be heartbreaking. “Rue Ramsay,” he begins. “It’s just an ordinary street in an ordinary neighborhood…where extraordinary things tend to happen.”

Jarrod “Toadfish” Rebecchi Marries Melanie Pearson, Who You May Remember From old the old days, the receptionist with the, uh, interesting laugh who married Joe Mangel. Melanie was a resident of Ramsay Street long before Toadie and Her Ponytail (RIP) hit the scene, so their union provides a good reason to round up faces past and present (even if some are on video call).

But as they prepare to get married, they realize it’s time for a fresh start. Since Toadie’s first wife, Dee, disappeared when he came down a cliff just hours after their wedding, and another marriage ended in an explosion and his wife died of a cancer, that seems fair enough.

However, Toadie and Melanie aren’t the only ones who want a fresh start. Everyone is moving! Everyone except Karl and Susan Kennedy. So it’s really a goodbye. Where is it? (We won’t spoil this piece).

Elsewhere, Izzy, who recently returned as Mal’s girlfriend – yes, that’s Izzy, the woman who (temporarily) separated Ramsay Street’s favorite couple Karl and Susan, and Mal, their eldest son – has showed his true colors and abandoned Mal. Who for? Shane Ramsay, one of the Neighbors originals, apparently because he’s a man with two cars.

But at least she was honest about it, and in these final episodes, it seems like some kind of truce with Susan has finally been reached.

Mike, who has returned to his motorcycle as if the past 30 years never happened, once again woos Plain Jane Superbrain.

And Paul Robinson, who has been back on the soap for years after an 11-year hiatus after his first stint, is embroiled in a romance with Terese Willis (confusingly Rebekah Elmaloglou). remember as Sophie from Home And Away).

There are nice nods to the past: Harold with his garden hose, Charlene dressed in a denim jumpsuit and looking ready to break into her old house through a window, as she did in his very first scene, plus all the messages from old friends. In the episodes leading up to this, there were also flashbacks to the old days.

Since this is soapland, some familiar faces might also return from beyond the grave. Of course, it’s all washed down with a healthy dose of cheese, but surely we wouldn’t want it any other way?

Speaking to Sky News before the episodes aired, Jackie Woodburne, who plays Susan Kennedy, said the cast had taken bets on how it would end. Could it be aliens? An explosion? A hole ?

But while it always had its drama, in the end Neighbors didn’t need any technical trickery, explosive storylines or a marriage that ended in disaster. It was simply an opportunity to reflect and honor the people who call Ramsay Street their home.

And who better than her matriarch Susan to do the honors? “Karl…I love you,” she said one last time to her husband, and I’m not crying, you’re crying.

Then she begins her Ramsay Street storybook message, walking down the cul-de-sac she has called home for nearly 28 years, watching over the celebrations.

“Things rarely went well, of course…but they usually worked out in the end,” she says.

“Everyone deserves a place in Ramsay Street history,” Susan continues, and now she recognizes viewers; you will really need a handkerchief for this piece. “Even those who watched us from afar.

“Together we were… the perfect mix.”

Just a step away, Neighbors is no more. Consider this my petition for a streamer to make a UK Gold and get it back from scratch.
