In a crowded GOP primary field in the 2022 race to succeed retired Republican Senator Roy Blunt, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt said his efforts to tackle what he called the program “really radical “in President Biden’s administration highlighted his campaign.
Schmitt, who won two statewide elections in Missouri – for treasurer and then attorney general – grabbed the headlines this year with a lawsuit against the Biden administration.

“I think people also appreciate the work we do in the GA office, aggressively pushing back the Biden administration. People have noticed,” Schmitt said in an interview with Fox News on Saturday, between meetings. as he walked around. at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Dallas, Texas.
“There is no GA in the country, I don’t think, who is working so hard to push back this really radical program,” Schmitt boasted. “I think people recognize him.”
Schmitt is among a long list of candidates for the GOP nomination, which includes former Gov. Eric Greitens – who stepped down in 2018 amid multiple controversies – Representative Vicky Hartzler in the 4th Congressional District of the Missouri, in the predominantly rural part of the west-central part of the state, and Mark McCloskey, the St. Louis lawyer who, along with his wife, made national headlines in the summer of 2020 for having detained guns outside their home to warn Black Lives Matter protesters.

And the Republican primary field could grow in the coming months, with Reps Billy Long, Jason Smith and Ann Wagner all considering offers.
In many ways, the GOP Senate contest has been a race to hug former President Donald Trump, who remains extremely popular with base Republican voters as he continues to play a kingmaker role in the party politics and repeatedly flirting with another White House candidate in 2024.
The former president remains neutral so far in the showdown, but an endorsement from Trump would have a major impact on the Missouri contest, as it does in other competitive Republican primaries in the 2022 election cycle .
“I fought alongside President Trump on the America First agenda as attorney general when he was in office,” Schmitt said. “I was the first elected official in the country to speak out in favor of tax cuts, making sure the border was secure. We defended all of these policies in court as a GA. And now I move on. a lot of my time pushing back against Biden’s radical agenda that seeks to destroy all of this progress. “
And he argued that “I think we are very well positioned as an America First / Missouri First candidate.”

Schmitt announced last week that he had raised $ 1.3 million in fundraising since his candidacy was announced in late March, which he called a “record in Missouri.”
While Greitens is the biggest draw yet in the GOP primary race, some Republicans are concerned about this political baggage. Asked about his rival for the nomination, Schmitt told Fox News “I think people across the country and in Missouri want to make sure we can win not only the primary but the overall.”
And he stressed that he believed he was “in the best position to win not only in August of next year, but in November”.

Missouri was once a competitive state, but has had a Republican streak in recent decades.
President Bill Clinton in 1996 was the last Democrat to win the state in the race for the White House and then the Senate. Claire McCaskill’s victory in 2012 was the last time a Democrat won a Senate election in the state. Trump won the state by 18 points in 2016 and 16 points last November.
Former state senator Scott Sifton, former Marine Lucas Kunce and former congressional candidate Gena Ross are among the Democrats who have launched campaigns. And a handful of other Democrats, including Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, are evaluating the offers.
