India secured a dramatic 3-0 victory over 14-time champions Indonesia in the Thomas Cup final in Bangkok on Sunday.
“India’s extraordinary achievement of winning the Thomas Cup with successive victories over Malaysia, Denmark and Indonesia in the play-offs called for a relaxation of the rules,” Thakur said in a statement.
“It is with pride that I announce the awarding of Rs 1 crore to the team that brings Indians so much joy this weekend.”
Thakur congratulated the Indian team’s players, coaches and support staff on the historic triumph.

“Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy wiped the slate clean winning every time they entered the court. in the round of 16,” he said.
“Lakshya Sen showed nerves of steel by winning the opening game against Indonesia. I’m sure the doubles combination of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila ad Krishna Prasad Garaga and Panjala Vishnuvardhan Goud as well as Priyanshu Rajawat will have a huge earned by being part of this historic campaign.”
The Department of Sports said it had contributed to the team’s unprecedented success by providing the players with training and competition support.
“A 10-week national camp starting in January has improved the level of fitness of the players. The support to engage Mathias Boe as a coach to help doubles combinations has also been significant,” the statement added. .
“During the past four years, the ministry has provided funding worth Rs 67.19 million to Indian badminton players for training and competition including salaries for foreign and Indian coaches.
“And in the past year alone, the ministry has supported up to 14 international exhibition trips at a cost of Rs 4.50 crore.”
