McConnell makes surprise trip to meet Zelenskyy in Ukraine

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell paid a surprise visit to Ukraine where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.

Zelenskyy’s administration announced the visit on social media and posted photos of the meetings.

“The president ended a meeting with influential US Republican senators. And the main thing is Ukraine’s true friends,” Andrij Sybiha, a member of the Zelenskyy administration, said on Facebook on Saturday.

The message touted the strong bipartisan support of “American friends” in Ukraine’s ongoing struggle to defeat the Russian invasion that will soon approach three months.

McConnell was joined by fellow GOP senators John Barrasso of Wyoming, Susan Collins of Maine and John Cornyn of Texas. Their offices did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Fox News.

The visit comes as the Senate weighs $40 billion in additional aid to Ukraine to help the country defeat Russia. McConnell and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y., wanted the package passed immediately, but Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., delayed the vote. about the concerns money needs to be watched.

“My oath of office is to the US Constitution, not a foreign nation,” Paul tweeted Thursday after single-handedly delaying a unanimous consent request to expedite the passage of bipartisan aid.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., visited Zelenskyy in Ukraine last week. The House on Tuesday passed Ukraine’s $40 billion legislation with a strong bipartisan vote of 368 to 57 and sent the bill to the Senate.

Despite the initial delay in the Senate, Zelenskyy’s administration has expressed optimism that the $40 billion package will be decided next week.

“Everything will be Ukraine!” Sybiha posted.
