Matt Damon may be one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars, but he still passed on one of the greatest movies ever to be made.

The 50-year-old actor gave a master class at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday and revealed to his audiences that he not only missed out on a very famous role, but also a breathtaking salary.

“I was offered a little movie called ‘Avatar’,” the star revealed, according to Deadline. “[Director] James Cameron offered me 10%. “

Unadjusted for inflation, “Avatar” is the highest-grossing film of all time, grossing $ 2.8 billion at the box office. The film was temporarily dethroned by “Avengers: Endgame,” but returned to the top after an overseas re-release.

“I’m going to make history,” Damon continued in Cannes. “… You will never meet an actor who turned down more money.”

The Oscar-winning actor said he had to turn down the role because he was shooting a Jason Bourne movie and made the “moral” choice not to abandon the action franchise.

In his place, Sam Worthington was cast for the lead role and won an Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films award for his work. Worthington, 44, is set to appear in the film’s next four sequels.

“Are there any suites?” Damon joked when a member of the audience pointed out that Cameron was working on other films. “Oh my God.”
