Lionel Messi fails to make shortlist for Ligue 1 Player of the Season award

The omission comes as no surprise, with Messi scoring four goals in 23 league appearances after leaving Barcelona last year.

The nominees for the Player of the Year award are Messi’s PSG team-mate Kylian Mbappe, Ligue 1’s top scorer with 24 goals this season, Rennes’ Martin Terrier, AS Monaco’s Wissam Ben Yedder, Dimitri Payet from Marseille and Lucas Paqueta from Lyon.

It also means that PSG striker Neymar, the league’s Player of the Year in 2017-18, didn’t make the shortlist either.

PSG won their 10th league title – and eighth in just the last 10 seasons – last month and are currently 14 points clear of second-placed Marseille.

Messi has signed a two-year contract with PSG ahead of the 2021/22 season, ending his more than 20-year association with Barcelona. During his time at the club, he won 10 La Liga titles and was named the league’s Player of the Year nine times.

In the Champions League this season, Messi has scored five goals in seven games, although PSG’s campaign ended in the Round of 16 with a loss to Real Madrid.

The Player of the Season, which Mbappe has won the last two times, is set to be announced on May 15.
