Labour’s David Lammy to be investigated by Commons watchdog | Political news

Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy is to be investigated by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards for allegedly breaking rules on reporting income and gifts.

The investigation was confirmed in an update from Commissioner Kathryn Stone on the UK Parliament’s website.

Under the MPs’ code of conduct, members must register any additional pay or hospitality within 28 days of receiving it.

But it is understood the shadow foreign secretary missed the deadline.

A spokesperson for Mr Lammy has apologized for “administrative errors” in his office, which they say led to late reporting in December 2021.

They said the Tottenham MP had ‘assured the Clerk that he has revised systems in place so that statements are made in a timely manner’, adding: ‘We are happy to provide the Commissioner for Parliamentary Standards with any further information “.

In addition to his role in the shadow cabinet, Mr. Lammy regularly hosts a show on LBC and gives a series of lectures.

His latest statement on the Register of Members’ Financial Interests also included a trip to the US to deliver a speech on Ukraine, costing £3,726.88 and paid for by Tufts University.

This latest inquiry follows similar allegations against Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer, who is also under investigation for late reporting.

Starmer also under investigation by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards

Sir Keir insisted he was ‘absolutely confident’ he had not broken the rules, also blaming ‘administrative errors’ by his office.

Meanwhile, the Labor leader is also being investigated by police over whether COVID rules were broken at an event in April 2021, when he was filmed having a drink and a curry to go.

The Labor leader has says he will quit if he is fined for the event.
