Killed officer was a veteran of the United States Capitol Police for 18 years

U.S. Capitol Police said the investigation into today’s attack on police officers near the U.S. Capitol is ongoing.

Police released a statement on Twitter with more details on the timeline for today’s attack on the Capitol.

“We are devastated to share the sad news that one of our officers involved in this afternoon’s incident has passed away. USCP is working to notify the officer’s next of kin before releasing any information. Additional Information”, police said in the statement.

The statement continued:

“Just after 1 p.m., a man in a blue sedan crashed into his vehicle in the north barricade of the United States Capitol, hitting two USCP officers. The ministry immediately locked the Capitol campus. The man exited. from the vehicle with a knife and ran towards our officers. At least one officer drew his gun and shot the suspect. USCP officer was transported by USCP cruiser to hospital. Second officer of the USCP was transported by DC Fire and EMS. The suspect was also transported by DC Fire and EMS to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at around 1:30 pm. ”
