MUMBAI: India’s veteran batsman Dinesh Karthik smashed an opening fifty in the Twenty20 internationals to help set up the hosts’ massive 82-point victory over South Africa in Rajkot on Friday and send the series to five games in a decision maker.

Karthik, 37, who played the team’s first international T20 game against the same opponents in 2006, crushed 55 from 27 deliveries to produce late fireworks as India went 169-6 in his 20 overs.

South Africa, who have won the first two matches of the series, got off to a horrific start to their pursuit when captain and fly-half Temba Bavuma pulled out injured after suffering blows to the hand and body.
Batting stalwart Quinton de Kock, who returned to the side after missing the last two games through injury, left soon after when he was exhausted – leaving South Africa a mountain too steep to climb.

The touring team only managed to go 87 for nine in 16.5 overs with Bavuma not returning to bat.
The teams will then travel to Bengaluru for the decisive fifth T20 on Sunday.

South Africa’s fast bowling attack earlier pegged India with the first wickets after they were batted.
The hosts, playing the series without several front row players including regular captain Rohit Sharma and sluggers Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, appeared to be heading for a below-par total in their must-win game.
India were reduced to 81-4 in the 13th when the substitute skipper Rishabh Pantswho had a torrid streak with the bat, was out for 17 years playing a bad shot.
He brought Karthik and Hardik Pandya together and the right-handed pair managed to resurrect Indian innings with a quick partnership of 65.

Karthik broke nine fours and two sixes in his entertaining shot, bringing the crowd to their feet.
Pandya provided effective support with 46 from 31 as the hosts plundered 73 runs from the final five overs.
