KOLKATA: Needing a win to survive in the I-League, debutants Kenkre FC are set to script one of the biggest turnarounds in Indian football and their key midfielder Siddharth Colaco says they won’t have “nothing to lose” from now on.
After picking up two points in his first 12 games to slip to the bottom of the table, Kenkre won three of his four matches and is unbeaten in the second phase to open the relegation battle and put pressure on Real Kashmir, who lost. four at the trot.
In the final round of the relegation play-offs on Wednesday, Real Kashmir and resurgent Kenkre FC face inescapable scenarios, even though the former have the upper hand, a point clear of fifth-placed Mumbai side in the six- team classification.
“To be honest, I accepted it would be a difficult season for us. But we had nothing to lose here. We will give our best until the end as we did and we look forward to a solid finish,” Colaco told the I-League website.
The 25-year-old has been part of their roller coaster ride, making 13 appearances and even captaining the team on several occasions.
“It’s always been my dream to play for Kenkre FC at this level and I think we can do a lot more and that’s exactly what we’re aiming for,” he added.
Born in Goa, Colaco’s family moved to Mumbai when he was a toddler and football entered his life during his school days. He then represented his university team before going to Kenkre FC.
Colaco says he was inspired by former India midfielder Climax Lawrence’s box-to-box style of play.
“Because of my height (5’7″), I used to play many positions in midfield and in attack. My idol at the time was Climax sir who played regularly for the national team and the box-to-box style of play inspired me a lot,” he concluded.
