Hyderabad boy Rahul Srivathsav is India’s 74th chief executive | Chess News

HYDERABAD: 19-year-old Peddi Rahul Srivathsav’s dream came true on Friday, when he broke the 2,500 ELO mark to clinch the Grandmaster title.
Rahul is Telangana’s fourth chief executive after Arjun Erigaisi in 2018, Harsha Bharathakoti (2019) and Raja Rithvik in 2021. He is the 74th in a long Indian list launched by Viswanathan Anand.
Rahul achieved the feat after drawing in the eighth round against GM Levan Pantsulaia at the 9th Cattolica Chess Festival in Italy.
A player must achieve three GM standards and pass the live rating of 2500 ELO points to become a GM. Rahul already has five GM standards and would get another one soon, but as the schedule was affected by the pandemic, he had to wait to collect the final points.
Despite the delay, he was excited to become general manager. “I am delighted to become the general manager. I could have achieved it a few years ago, but I am nevertheless happy. Now I can freely play different tournaments and try different things,” the boy from Hyderabad said on Saturday. YOU.
Inspired and initially trained by his father Peddi Srikanth, who was a collegiate player, Rahul proved himself by becoming the U-9 State Chess Champion in Visakhapatnam.
“I noticed his talents when he was quite young. Once he won that title, I decided to cheer him on,” his father said. “We were very excited when it broke the 2500 mark,” Srikanth added.
Like Arjun, Rahul also trained with Ramaraju and Muralikrishna. “I thank my parents for supporting me and my coaches Sipke from the Netherlands, Ramaraju and Muralikrishna from India,” Rahul said.
With Covid-19 wreaking havoc with the schedule, Rahul moved to Dallas to pursue his undergraduate studies. Chess helped him get a scholarship and study in the United States. While playing tournaments, he also trains with several internationals, including GMs at university.
“Magnus Carlsen is my favorite and Viswanathan Anand from India. And among the current lot, my dear friend Arjun. We both trained together and stayed together,” Rahul said and added that Arjun didn’t haven’t stopped playing well over the past three years. .
