Google recently decided to close YouTube Go which will probably stop working from August. The company is shutting down the application optimized for low-end hardware because it considers the service no longer needed. According to 9to5Google, the tech giant has now removed the “Go” branding from another app. The report suggests that Google’s “Gallery Go” app has lost its “Go” branding and this could indicate changes to lightweight versions of proprietary apps designed to work well on low-end devices. Google has rolled out these “Go” apps for devices that run on android Go.
What is the Android Go operating system?
The Android Go operating system was introduced by Google in 2017 with the Android 8.0 Oreo version. `The company launched this version of the operating system optimized for low-end hardware. The proprietary apps that were part of this initiative have been redesigned for the operating system variant. Early waves of apps that used the “Go” brand included — Google Search, Assistant, YouTube, Maps and Gmail.
What is the Gallery Go application ?
Google launched Gallery Go in 2019 as a lightweight variant of the company’s Photos app. However, Gallery Go app is specially designed for offline use and its size is less than 10MB. This app was able to automatically organize users’ library into people, selfies, nature, animals, documents, videos and movies . Moreover, the app also supports simple auto-enhancement editing.
What happened to the Gallery Go app?
According to the report, Google has updated the app with a new version (1.8.8.436428459) where the Go branding has been omitted from the name and is simply called “Gallery”. The company removed the word “Go” from the icon/name, app bar, and play store SEO. This app has over 100 million downloads and it is one of the few Go apps available for all devices including — Search, Maps and its navigation component among others.
Other apps that no longer have the “Go” brand
Previously, Google made a rebranding of this nature with another app. In 2018, the company changed the app’s name from “Files Go” to “Files by Google,” which marked the app’s pivot to a wider audience. However, it’s unclear if Gallery will follow a similar path, considering Google Photos is a popular and important product.
The Future of Google’s “Go” Brand
The report didn’t mention whether a broader change to the Android Go project is on the way, at least for apps. In 2021, Google announced the Android 12 GB operating system with several modifications, which is expected to be released this year. However, the company’s decision to remove the YouTube Go app suggests that the proprietary apps are sufficiently optimized.
