California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom sued his Texas counterpart with a series of ads condemning the Republican for what he described as his “perverse” stances on abortion and gun control.
The Friday ads came the same day Newsom signed legislation allowing private citizens to sue anyone who makes, sells, transports or distributes banned “assault weapons and ghost weapons.” The Friday legislation also allows residents who sue to receive up to $10,000 per gun if the lawsuit is successful.
The legislation was designed to mimic Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s 2021 abortion ban, which allows citizens to sue anyone who provides or assists with an abortion beyond six weeks of pregnancy. Texas residents can also win up to $10,000 if their lawsuit is successful.
“If Texas can ban abortion and put lives at risk, California can ban deadly weapons of war and save lives. If Governor Abbott is serious about protecting the right to life, we urge him to follow the ‘California example,’ the Newsom ad reads.

Newsom will run the full-page ads in several major Texas newspapers, including the Austin American-Statesman, Houston Chronicle and El Paso Times.
The ads are just the latest indicator that Newsom plans to break into California politics on the national stage. His name has already been floated by some as a potential Democratic replacement for President Joe Biden in 2024.
Both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris suffer from dismal approval ratings, leaving Democrats scrambling for an effective alternative.
Some Democratic Party stars already appear to be breaking up with Biden ahead of the midterms and 2024. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, declined to say on whether she would vote for president in 2024 during a recent appearance on CNN.

“You know, I think we should approve when we get to that,” Ocasio-Cortez told CNN host Dana Bash. “I think the president has done a really good job so far. And, you know, should he run again? I think I… you know, I think it’s… we’re going to throw a a look.”
