Four J&K fencers to represent India at Senior World Cup | More sports news



SRINAGAR: In a remarkable feat, four fencers from Jammu and Kashmir, including promising TOPS athlete Shreya Gupta, were selected on Monday to represent India at the upcoming Senior Saber World Cup later this week.
Meanwhile, the men’s trio consisting of Vishal Thapar, Javed Ahmed Choudhary and Mayank Sharma will take part in the Men’s World Cup in Madrid on May 6-7.
Sole female qualifier Shreya will be in action in Hammamet, Tunisia on May 8.
The quartet, who are the products of the State Fencing Center of Excellence at MA Stadium, Jammu, made the cut due to performance and placing at the Senior National Championship in Amritsar in March.
“We do a lot of fencing in Jammu and Kashmir. Under Khelo India, we have been given the Center of Excellence with state-of-the-art equipment, coaches, physios which benefit the fencers,” J&K Sports Secretary said Council, Nuzhat. Gul told PTI.
“We have a duty to provide the best possible facilities for our young people who are second to none in terms of skill and talent and the day is not far off when our athletes will also reach the podium at the Olympics,” said the Principal Secretary. by YSS Alok Kumar.
Three J&K judokas at the Indian Deaflympics
India will have the participation of eight judokas in the 65-member contingent at the ongoing Deaflympics in Caxias do Sul in Brazil, which ends on May 15.
Of the eight, three are from J&K – Rakesh Singh (under 60kg), Vishal Khajuria (under 66kg) and Rakhshinda Mehak (under 78kg).
The three judokas train at MA Stadium Jammu under senior judo coach Suraj Bhan Singh of J&K Sports Council.
