A 10-year-old child has been arrested in Florida after allegedly threatening to carry out a mass shooting, US police have said.

In a statement, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in Fort Myers, Fla., said it learned Saturday that a “threatening text message” had been sent by an elementary school student.

The local threat response team has been notified and has begun to investigate.

A fifth-grade student was questioned by officers and later charged with “threatening in writing to carry out a mass shooting”, according to police.

Footage was released showing the boy being led into the back of a car by an officer.

“This student’s behavior is sickening, especially after the recent tragedy in Uvalde, Texas,” Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said in a statement.

“Making sure our children are safe is paramount. We will have law and order in our schools! My team didn’t hesitate for a second… not for a second, to investigate this threat.

He added: “Right now is not the time to act like a petty criminal. It’s not funny.

The arrest came just days after 21 people, including 19 children and two teachers, were killed by a gunman at Robb Elementary School in UvaldeTexas.

Salvador Ramos, 18, entered the school on May 24 with a semi-automatic rifle and opened fire.

He was shot dead by officers, but questions were raised about the response time of local law enforcement and on Sunday the The US Department of Justice said it would investigate the response.
