TimesofIndia.com caught up with Lalit Yadav, who has scored 137 points in 9 games so far this season, at a 109.60 strike rate, to talk about DC’s chances of finishing in the last four, Rishabh’s on-court role Pant as the skipper behind the stumps, his improved field standards, and much more.
What has been your experience with the Delhi Capitals so far?
Rishabh (Pant) motivates me a lot. If your coach and captain have confidence in you and your abilities, it helps you grow. The player becomes more confident. Rishabh and Ricky Ponting are very supportive of me. Rishabh says “you must do well, but don’t think too much”. Rishabh and Ponting inject a lot of confidence into the team.
The team is currently struggling, but do you think the Delhi Capitals can still reach the playoffs and win their first title this time around?
I’m confident DC will make it to the playoffs. We have a few games left to play. We have been inconsistent. We won games and also ended up on the losing side. We also lost close matches. It is always said that the team that plays 40 overs perfectly wins the game. We focus on upcoming games. We don’t want to get laid back in any department. We will give our hundred percent.

Were there such instances where Rishabh Pant’s instructions behind the stumps helped you take a wicket?
Last year I dismissed Eoin Morgan and Sunil Narine in the same over. I was not comfortable with the way Pant had established the ground. He approached me and said ‘tu bass ball daal, zyaada se zyaada chauka lage na’. He prepared the ground for me and gave me the plan. I played as he told me and got Morgan’s wicket. He asked me to block his reverse swipe. Morgan hit me over the covers and ended up giving a defensive player a hold. I had not planned this counter. It was planned by Rishabh.
Are the capitals of Delhi highly dependent on Prithvi Shaw and David Warneryou think?
I won’t say DC relies heavily on it. Davy (David Warner) and Prithvi (Shaw) are game changers. If it’s their day, they act as game changers. It’s not like the team is totally dependent on them. In T20, you need a good start. If you get off to a good start, then any goal is achievable. If our openers manage to lay a solid foundation, we score big. They form the basis for us. Base or foundation is very important in a game.
Which Shane Watson named assistant coach? What advice did he give you?
If you talk about the mental aspect of the game, talking to a great legend of the game, he shares his experience, and what he used to think while playing. He told me how to support myself mentally and balance things on bad days. I learned a lot from him.
What work have you done to improve your field standards?
I worked my land a lot. Last year, Kaif monsieur (Md. Kaif) was there and I had many interactions with him. I learned a lot. We also have foreign players. Watching them, how they train, how they do their exercises on the court – it helps. Fielding is an attitude. I want to be good at this department. A good hold and a good run-out can change the course of the match. I want to contribute in every department for my team. I did a lot of strength training and also lost weight.
