Tlaib was asked about pressure from the Biden administration to increase funds for border technology for Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) border request includes $ 665 million investment in upgrading land ports of entry and $ 47 million to invest in detection capabilities in addition to investments in surveillance technology borders.
But activists have expressed concern that such funding, along with other methods such as facial recognition and DNA testing, are being used to prevent migrants from entering the United States. Tlaib was asked how they might “turn the tide” at the congressional level on funding such methods.
“Look, the simple answer to that question is we need to eliminate funding for CBP, ICE, and their parent organization, DHS,” she said.

“Time and time again we have seen it as advocates on the ground, as social service agencies on the ground continue to see over and over again, that these agencies are unable to humanely guide migrants through our system. immigration and instead continue to terrorize migrants. communities located within our communities, ”she said.
However, she claimed that this radical stance in opposition to increased technology is supported by many New Democrats in Congress,
“This approach is something that many, especially new members of Congress, come with all force and reject this idea,” Talib said. “They rebrand this kind of militarization or very inhumanly targeting of our immigrant neighbors, but at the end of the day it’s the same thing – targeting communities of color in a way that I think violates very much. human rights and dignity for so many of our communities. ”

She also criticized the “myth” that technology would make America safer, and instead said lawmakers should focus on comprehensive immigration reform – whose proposals typically include a full-scale amnesty for immigrants. illegal immigrants already in the country, and more of the routes through which migrants can enter the United States
“This is a distraction from what is really needed, which is comprehensive immigration reform policies in our country. We are a long way from getting to this conversation because people are distracted by these greedy approaches from for-profit companies that come to experiment on our immigrants and our border, “she said.” And I say ‘enough is enough.’
