Cyclone Asani expected to spare Odisha, Bengal | India News

BHUBANESWAR/KOLKATA: Despite IMD predictions that Cyclone Asani is likely to spare the Odisha coast, the state government plans to evacuate people from low-lying areas as a precautionary measure. The government has instructed collectors in Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsingpur and Kendrapada to evacuate people to cyclone shelters by Tuesday when these districts start witnessing Asani-induced rainfall.
Asani, which is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by Sunday evening, is expected to pass over the sea 150-200 km off the Odisha coast. Under its influence, coastal districts of the state are expected to receive moderate rainfall, with wind speeds reaching 40-50 km/h on May 10, 11 and 12, according to IMD forecasts.
Like Odisha, Asani will likely spare Bengal as well. The coastal districts of East Midnapore, South and North 24 Parganas are expected to receive rain until Thursday. Kolkata is unlikely to be affected.
