Texas state Democratic lawmakers have faced criticism on social media for a photo showing them unmasked and smiling on a flight to Washington, DC, in an attempt to block a Republican ballot bill.
“The rules for you but not for me are still hitting Democrats. Hey, @TSA, if these Democratic lawmakers are allowed to fly without a mask, the American people should do it. Follow science, not political science,” said the Republican representative Byron. Donalds tweeted in response to the photo.
More than 50 Texas Democrats fled the state on Monday in private jets in an attempt to prevent a Republican-backed voter integrity bill from passing in a special legislative session.

Masks are only required on commercial aircraft under President Joe Biden’s executive order of January, but some private airlines also require the mask to be worn on flights.
Critics were quick to accuse the Democrats in the photo of hypocrisy over wearing the mask, and also noted that lawmakers likely had to show ID to get on the plane, a method of identification many against which many Democrats oppose a vote.
This is the second time Texas Democrats have staged a walkout on the voting bill and left the state House of Representatives without a quorum to pass the bill. The walkout, however, does not give Democrats a chance to block the legislation permanently.
