The catastrophic fall was caused by a woman standing by the roadside of the Tour’s opening stage.

According to video coverage of the race, the sign hit German rider Tony Martin who was riding close to the front of the field. Martin fell, resulting in dozens of runners falling behind him.

The forces of order in Finistère, in the west of France, have opened an investigation into the cause of “unintentional injuries … by manifestly deliberate violation of an obligation of safety or caution” according to a press release. on Facebook.

Authorities called for witnesses as the woman left the scene before investigators arrived, according to the Facebook post.

A spokesperson for Amaury Sports Organization, the organizer of the Tour de France, confirmed to CNN that the company had filed a complaint with the authorities.

According to the Tour de France website, three riders withdrew from the race after the first stage on Saturday, including German Jasha Sutterlin who was involved in the crash.

His team, the DSM, said in a statement that Sutterlin had been “taken to hospital for tests which revealed no broken bones, but a severe contusion on his right wrist which will require further tests at home.” .

The accident derailed the race, it took nearly 25 kilometers for the peloton to regroup completely.

It was the first of two major accidents on the stage, the second 8 km from the end involving quadruple champion Chris Froome and many others.

2012 Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins said he had no sympathy for the fan involved, who may not have intended to cause such an accident.

“They are an integral part of the Tour de France spectacle,” he told Eurosport. “And this year, in particular, to be able to come back on the road and watch it. I don’t know how you watch it.”
