Maharashtra recorded almost 1.6 lakh additional deaths in 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, a jump of 16.6% from the previous year. This is the largest increase in deaths from all causes the state has seen in a decade and shows how hard the virus has hit the population. Maharashtra recorded a total of 8,08,783 deaths in the first year of the pandemic, compared to 6,93,800 in 2019, according to data released by the Registrar General on Tuesday. In previous years, annual deaths increased by an average of 3-4%.
