NEW DELHI: Congress announced on Saturday that it would launch a three-phase agitation called “Mehngai-mukt Bharat Abhiyaan” from March 31 to April 7 to target the Center on inflation.
Congress General Secretary and Spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that in the first phase of the campaign, Congress workers and ordinary people will demonstrate outside their homes and in public places on March 31.
He said people would garland LPG cylinders, beat drums and ring bells to highlight the inflation problem and seek to draw the attention of the ‘deaf BJP government’ against the insurmountable rise in gas prices cookware, petrol and diesel.
“The Congress Speaker, in consultation with the general secretaries of the party and state officials, has decided to uphold the cause of the people in a three-phase program – Mehngai-Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan,” Surjewala said.
From April 2 to 4, the Congress, along with NGOs, religious, social organizations and resident social bodies, will organize district-level dharnas and marches across the country, he added.
On April 7, the party will hold “Mehngai-mukt Bharat” dharnas and marches in all state headquarters with the help of social and religious organizations, NGOs and individuals, Surjewala said.
“The people of India have been betrayed, duped and deceived by the (Narendra) Modi government. After keeping the prices of petrol, diesel, cylinder gas, piped natural gas (PNG) and CNG unchanged for 137 days to secure the people’s vote, the past week has been a nightmare for every household,” he added.
Surjewala pointed out that the Center again raised petrol and diesel prices by 80 paise per liter on Saturday – the fourth hike in five days – totaling 3.2 rupees per litre.
The decision to initiate the agitation was made at a meeting of congressional secretaries and state officials here on Saturday. The meeting also discussed the party’s membership campaign and the current political situation in the country.
Congress has been heavily targeting the government on the issue of rising prices, especially fuel, in recent days.
Earlier, former Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the government over rising fuel prices, saying “the king is preparing for the palace, while subjects are reeling from inflation.”
In a tweet in Hindi, Congress Chief Spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, “Inflation in Modi government – ‘new date, same problem. This morning also started with rising prices. Again today, the rate was increased by Rs.0.80.
“Every day new rate of diesel/petrol in new India, four attacks in five days, looting of Rs. 3.2/L,” he said.
“BJP continues – celebratory swearing, public suffers inflation everyday?” said Surjewala.
His remarks came a day after the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government was sworn in in Uttar Pradesh. The BJP won four of the five Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Goa and Punjab. The AAP came to power in Punjab.
