Cause of “Tiger King” star Erik Cowie, mode of death revealed

Erik Cowie’s cause and manner of death have been revealed.

The zookeeper, who was famous for his appearance in “Tiger King,” died aged 53 in September.

The New York City Chief Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to Fox News on Monday that Cowie’s mode of death was natural and that the cause was “acute and chronic alcohol use.”

Cowie entered the public sphere in 2020 with the release of Netflix’s “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness,” a docusery that followed Cowie’s boss Joseph Maldonado-Passage and his zoo full of exotic animals.

On the show, Cowie said he found the job on Craiglist and was desperate for work.

According to TMZ, Cowie died on September 3. He was found dead in New York.

At the time, cops confirmed to Fox News that they responded to an emergency call from “an unconscious man inside 21 East 55 Street within 67 PCT limits.”

The man was in the local room. “The EMS was there and declared the deceased man. The forensic pathologist will determine the cause of death, ”authorities said.

No drugs were reportedly found at the scene.

Cowie was one of the animal keepers at the Grand Wynnewood Exotic Wildlife Park and testified against Maldonado-Passage – better known as Joe Exotic – who is currently serving 22 years in a Texas prison after being convicted of ‘hiring two contract killers in a failed murder. for rent against her rival at the Big Cat Zoo, Carole Baskin.

Cowie also testified in court that he witnessed the mistreatment of animals by Exotic and confirmed that Exotic killed some of the older big cats to make way for new ones.

According to TMZ, Cowie was arrested for drunk driving after a car crash in Oklahoma in May. He pleaded guilty and was supposed to appear in court for sentencing, but never did.

After “Tiger King” went viral, Cowie also got a new set of teeth.
