President Biden admitted that the collapse of the Afghan civilian government has unfolded “faster than we expected”, admitting a miscalculation in the administration’s withdrawal from the two-decade-long war on Monday in his speech to the nation.
“We were clear about the risks, we planned for every eventuality, but I always promised the American people that I would be frank with you,” he said.
“The truth is it went faster than expected,” Biden added.
The president then continued the administration’s efforts to blame Afghan leaders for the fall of Kabul, saying the political leaders “gave up and fled the country.”
“So, what happened?” Biden asked. “Afghan political leaders gave up and fled the country. “
Fallen Afghan President Ashraf Ghani left the country for Tajikistan on Sunday, two sources told CNN.
“The Afghan army collapsed, sometimes without trying to fight. If anything, the developments of the last week have reinforced the end of US military involvement in Afghanistan keeping the right decision, ”he added. “US troops cannot and should not fight in a war and die in a war that Afghan forces are unwilling to fight for themselves.”
Biden also pointed the finger at Ghani in his speech.
“When I welcomed President Ghani and President Abdullah to the White House in June, and again when I spoke to Ghani by phone in July, we had very frank conversations. We talked about how Afghanistan should prepare to wage its civil wars after the US military leaves, to clean up corruption in the government, so that the government can work for the Afghan people, ”said Biden.
He continued: “We have talked at length about the need for the Afghan leadership to unite politically – they have done none of that. I also urged them to engage in diplomacy, to seek a political settlement with the Taliban. This advice was categorically refused. Mr. Ghani insisted that the Afghan forces would fight. And obviously, he was wrong.
