DEHRADUN: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to hold its highly anticipated Uttarakhand Legislative Party meeting immediately after Holi on Sunday, March 20. The party will decide on the name of the CM during the meeting and the swearing-in ceremony will take place the next day.
“It looks like the meeting would probably take place on March 20 as some parts of Kumaon would be celebrating Holi on March 19 and MPs would be in their constituencies,” Uttarakhand BJP media officer Manveer Singh Chauhan told TOI.
Chauhan said the party had begun preparations for the swearing-in ceremony, which could take place the next day. “Uttarakhand Party Leader Dushyant Gautam chaired a virtual meeting with state party leaders and provided an update on preparations for the swearing-in,” Chauhan said.
Sources said central observers Rajnath Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi may reach Dehradun on Saturday evening or Sunday to attend the meeting. They added that the consensus seems to have been built among the most senior leaders for the face of the CM and that the mantle could fall on a “surprise candidate”.
The party won 47 of 70 seats in the state in recently concluded polls. However, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami lost the election for his constituency, Khatima, which led to deliberations over who would be chosen by the saffron party to hold the top job.
