LUCKNOW: UP BJP could create a major surprise in its slate of Rajya Sabha candidates amid speculation that a senior cabinet minister Yogi Adityanath could be one of its candidates in the upper house elections scheduled for June 10.
It is learned that the name of the chief minister was on the list of probable 20, which the BJP state unit sent to the central leadership.
Given their strength in the UP assembly, the NDA and SP led by the BJP and its allies can easily win seven and three seats respectively. Political circles are abuzz at the prospect that the BJP could choose a Lucknow businessman to lock horns with SP for the high voltage contest for the 11th seat. The businessman whom the BJP may present as its eighth candidate also happens to be the son of a deceased politician.
Sources said the BJP may also repeat some of its incumbent MPs – Shiv Pratap Shukla, Zafar Islam, Jai Prakash Nishad, Surendra Nagar and Sanjay Seth. The sources said it was certain the party would back a prominent Brahmin leader as one of its candidates. It is, however, uncertain whether Shukla will be repeated or whether the BJP will field former state unit chief Laxmi Kant Bajpai.
BJP insiders are not ruling out the possibility of welcoming a Jat leader from west UP to shore up the community that played an important role in the party’s return to power. This becomes more relevant as the BJP is reportedly looking to counter SP’s move towards the RLD leader on the ground, Jayant Chaudhary. Experts say the SP chose Sibal, who played a major role in securing the bail of top leader Azam Khan in a bid to shore up Muslim votes with Jats.
Speculation is also rife that Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi is being routed to Rajya Sabha from the UP. Naqvi, who is now a Rajya Sabha MP from Jharkhand, will retire on July 7. Another name circulating is that of Naresh Agarwal, who switched to the BJP after being denied a ticket by SP in 2018. Naresh’s son Nitin is a minister in the Yogi cabinet.
