President Biden gave a low-key response on Saturday to sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson’s suspension due to a positive marijuana test that will remove her from the Tokyo Olympics later this month.
“The rules are the rules and everyone knows the rules that go into effect,” the president told reporters after being asked to give his opinion. “Whether they have to stay the rules is a different question, but the rules are the rules… but I was really proud of the way she answered.”
Richardson, 21, from Dallas, apologized on Friday, explaining that she had used the drug to deal with the loss of her biological mother who died shortly before the race.
Unlike Biden, Progressive Democrats have been hesitant about the suspension, with many linking it to racism.

United States Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y., tweeted on Friday: “We worked with @RepRaskin and the Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Subcommittee to formally ask @USAntiDoping to put end to the suspension of Sha’Carri Richardson. any scientific basis. It is rooted only in the systemic racism that has long guided anti-marijuana laws. ”

Liberal actor Seth Rogan, known for smoking weed, has also linked Richardson’s suspension to racism.
“The idea that weed is a problematic ‘drug’ is rooted in racism,” he wrote. “It doesn’t make sense for Team USA to disqualify one of this country’s most talented athletes thinking he’s rooted in hate. It’s something they should be ashamed of. Plus, if weed you made it fast, I would be FloJo. ”
Others, like U.S. Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., Took the opportunity to advocate for the legalization of drugs. “It’s high time we legalized marijuana,” she tweeted.
Some Republicans have also come to Richardson’s defense.

Biden has not been an advocate for the federal legalization of marijuana, but has spoken about the decriminalization of possession during the 2020 campaign.
White House Biden also controversially fired or reprimanded several young staff earlier this year after admitting to “using marijuana in the past” in security clearance forms.
Marijuana is not a performance enhancing drug, but it is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, which USA Track and Field tracks.
Richardson won the 100-meter at the United States Olympic Track and Field Trials on June 19 in Eugene, Ore., But tested positive in the competition, invalidating his victory and citing a month’s suspension from the sport.

She apologized during an appearance on NBC’s “Today” show.
“I apologize.
