President Biden Wednesday morning, he tore a cicada from her neck before his trip to Europe for the G-7 summit.
The President’s flight from Dulles International Airport in N. Virginia to the UK – his first overseas flight since taking office – has been delayed for several hours due to a problem with the cicadas, White House officials said.
“Watch out for the cicadas,” Biden told reporters before take off. “I just got one – got it.”
A clutch of giant insects has exploded in parts of the northeast after living underground for about 17 years – the time it takes for periodic cicadas to become adults.
The president will meet with G-7 and NATO allies on his trip to discuss ways to tackle the coronavirus pandemic and an increasingly aggressive China and Russia.
Biden left Joint Base Andrews in Md. On Wednesday morning expected to arrive in the UK Wednesday evening local time. His first agenda will be a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday, before joining G-7 leaders for the group’s summit this weekend.
