At least 11 dead in huge gas explosion in central Chinese city

The explosion took place around 6:30 a.m. local time in Zhangwan District of Shiyan City, Hubei Province, according to local authorities.

Authorities rescued more than 100 people from the rubble, including 37 seriously injured, according to state media CCTV, citing local officials.

The city’s municipal office first said that “many” people were trapped after the incident.

Images circulating on social media, which appeared to come from the scene, showed rescuers in orange coveralls working through the wreckage of razed houses.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, according to the city government, which told China’s Weibo microblogging platform that it was organizing rescue efforts.
