Asian Archery Cup: India confirms six medals including two gold | More sports news


SULAYMANIYAH (Iraq): Continuing their dominance in a depleted field, India’s junior archers confirmed six more medals, including two golds, in the Asian Cup Stage 2 individual sections on Monday.
After winning six medals in the team events on Sunday, the Indians did an encore in the individual sections enjoying an exceptional display from the compound archers.
Prathamesh Fuge, Rishabh Yadav and Jawkar Samadhan, who claimed the top three seeds, rose to the top of the qualifying standings to keep India in contention for a rare clean sweep in the compound men’s individual section.
Top-seeded Fuge edged Sergey Khristich of Kazakhstan in a thrilling 143-143 (10*-10) shoot-off, shooting his arrow closer to the center to advance to the final.
Fuge will face his teammate Yadav in the final. Yadav also took the tie-breaking route to the final, beating teammate Samadhan 146-146 (10-9).
India’s hope for a clean sweep will rest with Samadhan taking on Sergey in the bronze medal play-off.
In the compound women’s individual section, top seed Parneet Kaur beat Biswas Suma of Bangladesh 146-137 while Sakshi Chaudhary defeated Shamoli Ray of Bangladesh 143-140 to make it an all-India final.
In the individual men’s recurve section, India secured at least a silver medal after sixth-seeded Mrinal Chauhan beat top-ranked teammate Parth Salunkhe 7-3 in the semi-finals.
Chauhan will face fourth seed Ruman Shana of Bangladesh in the final.
India will also have a chance to win a bronze medal with former national champion Salunkhe against Uzbekistan’s Amirkhan Sadikov in the third place match.
Bhajan Kaur edged Bangladesh’s Beauty Ray 6-5 (8*-8) in the jump-off to advance to the women’s individual recurve section final.
Bhajan will face Diya Siddique of Bangladesh in the gold medal bout.
India sent a junior team for the encounter which is exhausted by the absence of Asian heavyweights China, Chinese Taipei and China.
