Former Hollyoaks star Abi Phillips was diagnosed with thyroid cancer aged 28, she has revealed.

The actress and singer broke the news to her followers on instagram.

“So I took these pictures before my scans and after my biopsy laughing a good old time thinking how ridiculously dressed I looked in the hospital before a concert, not expecting a single moment to receive the news that I made two weeks later,” she said.

“I had already been referred to the doctors after they found two lumps in my neck, they passed it on and said I was ‘young’ and it would be nothing and I was ‘probably overcoming a cold’ or my body was “fighting something”.

“Even though that’s what I wanted to hear, I wanted everything checked out for my own peace of mind.

“I made an appointment with a specialist and immediately she told me she was very worried about the location of my bumps and referred me for an urgent biopsy and scans.”

Phillips, who starred as Liberty Savage on the Channel 4 soap from 2010 to 2013, said she was diagnosed by a consultant at QE Hospital in Birmingham two weeks later.

She said she was told she would need surgery and radiation therapy.

“I never thought I would be told I had cancer at 28, you never think that’s going to happen to you,” she said.

Phillips added that she wouldn’t have gone to see a specialist if she hadn’t seen a social media post from former Love Island reality show contestant Demi Jones, who had previously received a diagnosis of thyroid cancer.

“His bumps were in the exact same place as mine,” she said.

“If you ever find a lump or anything unusual on your body, never think it’s nothing, don’t be told you’re fine by the GP and you’re ‘young’, always do get things checked out by a specialist if you can and insist on tests even if it turns out to be nothing, because catching things early is crucial for a good prognosis.

“This time next week I will be on the mend after my surgery.”
