NEW DELHI: India won their second shooting gold at the 24th Deaflympics underway in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, with Abhinav Deshwal winning the men’s 10m air pistol title.
The 15-year-old from Roorkee, Uttarakhand was tied with silver winner Oleksii Lazebnyk of Ukraine at 234.2 points apiece at the end of the 24-stroke final before claiming gold in a shoot-off where he shot a 10.3 to his opponent’s 9.7. .
Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Ming-Jui won the bronze medal.

Abhinav made the top eight in the final round after finishing second in the 60-shot qualifying round with a score of 575 out of 600. He was also level on points there with Kim Kihyeon, but the Korean dominated thanks to more than 10 interiors.
Shubham Vashist, the second Indian in the field, also qualified for the final, finishing sixth with a score of 563. He also retired at the same position in the final.
It wasn’t all easy for Abhinav in the final as he started slowly. He finished fifth after the first series of five hits and moved up to fourth after 10 hits.
He showed great consistency, however, and fought to string together good scores early in the singles and slowly worked his way up, eventually catching up to Oleksii who had maintained a top-two position throughout the final. .
Going into the final two shots, Abhinav was 0.6 behind Oleksii. He showed nerves of steel to maintain high scores when it mattered most, even as Oleksii faltered, allowing the Indian to clinch the title.
India now has four medals from the shooting competition at the Deaflympics.
Dhanush Srikanth won gold in the men’s 10m air rifle while Shourya Saini won bronze in the same event. Then on Thursday, Vedika Sharma won a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol.
India sent 10 shooters in the 65-person contingent for the Brazil Deaflympics.
