Darbar revealed that KK also recognize Tadap Tadap’s special status. He revealed, “Every time he met me in the years after Tadap Tadap, KK always joined his hands and said to me, ‘Ismail bhai aap mujhe se koi bhi gana mat gavao (Ismal bhai you don’t need to give me another song). You gave me unimaginable success with just one song. I’ve sung so many songs over the years, but I’ve never had a show where the audience didn’t ask Tadap Tadap on repeat. He never failed to recall the crazy experience of making that song. He was sleeping soundly and I went up to him at 4am in the studio and woke him up to tell him the tune was ready for him to sing. He sang Tadap Tadap at 4 am.
Reminiscing about the creation of the song, Darbar recalled an original story behind the creation of this song. He said, “This song was actually not composed for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie. It was a huge movie and the producer asked me to have famous kawali singers sing this song. I was a newcomer at the time, i hadn’t even met SLB. Nevertheless, i called the kawali singers and we started recording them in the studio. After spending half a day recording, i finally figured out that my song wasn’t going very well. Mehboob bhai was my lyricist and he gave me KK’s number. I had never spoken to KK in my life, but I called him. By coincidence , I was recording in Bandra and KK was in Santacruz. He just showed up at the studio. I just played the song for him and his first reaction was “Main ye gaana nahi gaa sakta hoon”. But we managed to record the song that day. Once the song was ready, we took it to this big producer, who had a fit. He took it on his ego that a newcomer like me, went against his instruction to record the song with kawali sing ers and recorded it with KK instead. He is alarmed at my audacity. I had to quit his big budget production because of KK’s vocals. The only thing I said to the producer was, “Main aapke saath isiliye kaam nahi karunga kyunki aap mein music ki tameez nahi hai (The only reason I don’t want to work with you is because you don’t respect not the music)”. ”
It was a promise and dedication that allowed Ismail Darbar and KK to collaborate on the song. Darbar added, “When KK first sang it, I didn’t even have money to pay for it. I had just been kicked out of the big movie. So I promised KK that whenever i will sign for my movie, i will make sure only you sing this song.KK reacted and said: “Ismal bhai aap toh filmi baatein kar rahe ho (Ismal bhai, you are dramatic)”. and said, “Ye filmi baat nahi hai, ye mere vaada hai ki jab bhi mujhe film milegi, ye gaan tu hi gayega (I’m not dramatic, I promise you that whenever I get signed for a movie, I’ll make sure to you were singing that song)’.”
Fortune paid off when Darbar met Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He said: “I met SLB 4-5 months later and he continued to test me for almost 6 months, wanting to make sure I had the skills and talent to compose the music for his film. Eventually I got tired and called SLB and said, I want you to hear a song. I had never played this track for Sanjay before. I just had the audio tape with me. When I arrived at SLB’s flat in Yari Road I just put the song on and he didn’t play it one, two or three times but nine times on the loop When he turned around he was crying his head off SLB remarked, “Aaj mujhe apni film ka maqsad mil gaya. Aaj mujhe pata chala ki main apni film ka interval aur end kahan karunga (Today I found the purpose of my film. I understood where and how the interval and climax of my film will take place). This is how SLB signed me for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
Relating his story to the 4 AM episode of KK, Darbar revealed, “The scratch recording that SLB heard on loop only featured one antara from the track. After signing for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, lyricist Mehboob wrote the second antara – Agar Mile Khuda Toh, Poochoonga Khudaya, Jism Mujhe De Ke Mitti Ka, Sheshe Sa Dil Kyon Banaya Tadap Tadap was the first track to be recorded for the album Everyday in the recording, SLB used to cry. It took us 4-5 days to finalize this recording and SLB was emotional and crying every day. It was the recording of this second antara which was made at 4 o’clock in the morning with KK.
Holding back his emotions, Darbar revealed what makes KK so special. He said, “What I liked the most about KK was his simplicity. I like these kind of honest people. He had no air about himself. Maybe that’s why I was so shaken by the news of his passing.. I feel very sad. I was about to cut my birthday cake, when a friend called me to inform me of KK’s death. It upset me.” He signed off saying: “I had to leave the celebrations at home, I asked my wife and children to give me some time off, so I could be alone on the streets for a while. and mourn the loss of my good friend.”
