GUWAHATI: As Gujarat lawmaker Jignesh Mevani returned home after securing bail in an assault case filed by a female sub-inspector of state police, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, said the female officer wanted to challenge the bail order in the High Court.
“The District Judge has issued a judgment. The policewoman who complained about the assault on her has now requested my permission to appeal to the High Court against the Barpeta District Judge’s order. The case has come in. If I give my consent, she can go to the high court,” Sarma told reporters after attending the joint meeting of CMs and high court chief justices in New Delhi on Saturday.
Barpeta District Judge Aparesh Chakravarty, in his order granting Mevani’s bail on Friday, said the FIR accusing the lawmaker of assaulting and attempting to outrage the decency of a female sub-inspector of police in presence of two male police officers inside a moving vehicle was “untrue”.
Mevani has been released nine days after being arrested in his home state by Assam police for his tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The government wanted to crush my spirit and my confidence, but these arrests made no difference to me. Any number of FIRs can be filed against me but I will not budge an inch from my position,” he said. Mevani said before flying off. He added: “My bail order alone is case law.”
