The Republican National Committee voted unanimously to withdraw the Commission of Presidential Deputies.
The RNC has made clear that it is not departing from the format of the presidential debate, but rather opposes CPD control over the process. RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel made the announcement in a statement on Thursday.

“Debates are an important part of the democratic process, and the RNC is committed to free and fair debates,” McDaniel said in the statement. “The Commission on Presidential Debates is biased and has refused to enact simple, common-sense reforms to help ensure fair debates, including holding debates before voting begins and selecting moderators who have never worked for candidates on the debate stage.”

“Today the RNC voted to opt out of the biased CPD, and we will find new and better platforms for debate to ensure that future candidates do not have to go through the biased CPD in order to make their case. arguments with the American people,” she added.
The RNC went on to list a number of complaints about the CPD’s handling of previous elections, such as not holding the first debate in 2020 until 26 states have already started early voting.

The RNC also complained that a majority of CPD board members had publicly disparaged former President Donald Trump ahead of the proceedings.
Former President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign made many of the same complaints in the 2020 election.
The CPD has yet to respond to the RNC’s vote.
