1st Test: South Africa’s Harmer shines with bat and ball against Bangladesh | Cricket News

DURBAN: South African non-spinner Simon Harmer took all wickets in his first Test appearance for seven years as Bangladesh reached 98 in four at the end of play on a dismal second day of the first Test at Kingsmead on Friday.
The tourists are 269 points behind South Africa’s 367 opening leg tally in which Temba Bavuma have dropped seven points in less than a century, with the home side exhausted, not having any his prime paced attack, taking control of the game with rotation.
Fly-half Mahmudul Hasan Joy (44 not out) will resume on the third morning with night watchman Taskin Ahmed (0 not out), but the visitors were undone by controlled slow bowling from Harmer (4-42) and Keshav Maharaj ( 0-24), who throttled the run rate by allowing just 66 runs in 39 overs between them.
Harmer’s wicket choice was Najmul Hossain Shanto (38) as the ball fell to the center stump and turned to strike high. Keegan Petersen also landed a great diving catch on the short leg to fire visiting captain Mominul Haque for a duck.
Harmer played the last of his five Tests in 2015 before embarking on a career in English county cricket, but was recalled along with a number of South African bowlers missing in the Indian Premier League.
The home side resumed their first inning on 233 for four, anchored by mid-order batsman Bavuma, who scored 93 in a pro inning as he missed a second test ton in his 50th appearance.
Bavuma has averaged nearly 50 Tests over the past 18 months and has been a mainstay in the middle order, but three figures continue to elude him, with his only ton of Tests in eight years with the team coming against the England in Cape Town in 2016.
On this occasion he was upset trying to cut spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz (3-94) but was undone by the tight turn.
South Africa’s tail waggled as they put in 122 for the last four wickets, helped by 38 from Harmer, while Bangladesh tailor Khaled Ahmed (4-92) was the visitors’ most impressive bowler .
