A fluffy white dog found stranded on cracked Arctic ice was rescued last week by Russian sailors in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Region.
Samoyed “Aika”, one year old, had drifted away from her owner and her village, wandering near the icebreaker “Alexander Sannikov”.

Video from the scene shows the moment the ship’s crew decided to save the animal – fearing it would be injured by the moving ships or died on the ice.
“We looked at all the options for getting the animal out of the ice and placed a ceremonial ladder that the dog used to board,” said assistant captain Yevgeny Nagibin in a video recording obtained by Reuters. “Later, we used mobile communications to contact the locals, found the owner of the dog, and a few hours later the animal was safely returned to the village.”

Aika can be seen walking cautiously around rugged chunks of ice to climb the ladder as the sailors whistle and throw treats.
According to The Moscow Times, workers at Gazpromneft-Yamal put Aika on a hovercraft to take her back to her hometown of Mys Kamennyy.
The dog’s owner, Svetlana Chereshneva, said she and members of her village had been looking for Aika for more than a week.

“When they showed me the video, I didn’t recognize her at first. She looked so miserable, all covered in ice, and she wasn’t walking well because she had pricked her little paws. on sharp ice, ”she told Russian Tiumenskaya news site Liniya in a video. “Now she can walk more or less.”
Chereshneva said that Aika is now much happier and her appetite has returned, but that she no longer rushes out.
